Picture of the month ...

April 2011: When will we see us? For me, the picture captures the diversity, beauty, emotionality and creativity of our species. In this composite drawing, the artist has made the transition from race to species: race no longer has any meaning or relevance. When will we be able to see us for who we are? Truly see the largest (in total mass) and most powerful species ever on Earth, which in the drawing overpowers the richness of the planet's biosphere, and which has the potential to be the steward of our beautiful home planet — or its curse. When will we understand that exercising power for no other reason than the fact that we have the power is not a smart thing to do, particularly when this power exceeds anything our planet has seen before? As the global species we have become, we can only thrive and live a “luxurious life on a healthy planet” (Beyond Sustainability, 2009) together. Will we be able to make the transition to a global species and see (and prioritize) what is common in us, or will we continue to focus on the differences as justification for continued exploitation and killing of ourselves and the planet?
