Story of the month ...

January 2013: New Year on Another Planet: The thoughts people express at the start of a new year hold much truth about their country and their culture. What Gillian Schutte had to say to her white fellow country women and man in South Africa paints a clear picture of the apartheid that never left South Africa. Reading her letter in the newspaper confirmed all the experiences we had in South Africa, and it also strengthened our believe that we need to leave. See the article here or read a slightly modified version of her thoughts here ...

In the same newspaper, an advertisment offered a black friend for those white people who felt they needed one to prove that they were not racists, but did not know how to make friend with black people. These two news items underline the “willful blindness” that keeps people from seeing the reality of South Africa: a separated country where whites and blacks have to pretend that they are integrated and that things are improving, but the opposite is the case.

If you have a story, thought, or picture worth to be considered as story, thought or picture of the month, please feel free to inform me about it by sending an e-mail to hpplag@unr.edu.
