Thought of the month ...

June 2013: Running in Fog: The first article in my new column “On the Edge” in ApoGeo (formerly Imaging Notes) has been published with the heading “Finding a Safe Operating Space for Humanity”. In this column, I clarify that it is not the planet, but rather humanity that is on the edge. We are on Titantic after it hit an iceberg, and our quest should be on finding lifeboats so that humanity as a civilization can survive. Many years ago while hiking in Iceland, I survived because I was precautionary when I ended up in fog. I convinced the group that it was better to stop and wait for better sight. The next morning, we realized that we were only a few steps away from the edge of a deep drop. Humanity, on the other hand is not stopping. Not knowing where the edges are, we keep running and try to speed ip, declaring growth as the only measure of success. Running in fog can be very dangerous.

The column starts on page 22 of the Spring issue available at http://www.apogeospatial.com/images/apogeo_sp2013.pdf. I will have four quarterly contributions to this column each year.
